Must go here if you are a tourist in the area. Breakfast cooked up fresh by a sweet older couple, followed by watching them feed a herd of very tame deer. Just purely wholesome. Please support their business.

I didn’t stay overnight, just had breakfast at the counter, which is between the dining area and the store. Food was great; the bacon was cooked perfectly, the portions were generous, and the menu is reasonably priced. My servers were Stace and her daughter from Ohio, who work there seasonally and who are members of the family that’s owned the resort for 50+ years, and they were super nice.

First of all if you’re old, I guess go there and then they won’t mess with you but if you’re young, trying to have a good time, all they do is spy on you. Take all your tips. Wait for you to pay for everything and then try to charge you after once you leave and complain that you did this and that The fishing is very awesome, but I don’t pay to have a good time to be harassed by your coworkers when we’re not doing anything wrong

Omg beautiful.
People have to hike and travel for days to see scenery like this elsewhere.
Awesome waitress’ and staff.
We were a huge group. We filled the place, all at the same time and they served us well.

My wife has been coming to Virginia lakes since she was a teenager. After we married, she introduced me to the place. I fell in love with the area and the resort. Bear in mind this a rustic fishing resort, a no-frills place. If you want frills go to Mammoth instead. If you are looking for a fishing, hiking or horseback riding place without parallel give it a try. I highly recommend the cabins by the lake. Waking up and seeing a beautiful lake and a mountain out your window is a wonderful way to start your day. Carolyn's pie is to die for but be early as it goes fast. We missed out one day, and my wife was heartbroken. She did recover the next day after an injection of berry pie! I have stayed there twice now for a week each time. I will be retuning on a regular basis from here on out.

My wife and I had never been to the resort and drove to see if it would be a good place to stay and bring friends. In my opinion, it is not. We just stopped by for lunch and a map of the area. We had a dog so indoor dining was not an option. We ordered take-out and were rudely (older woman) advised we couldn't sit on the porch to eat it. There were no tables outside so we ended up sitting on a rock across Virginia Creek (no tables anywhere). When i returned the beer mug with the take-out carton in hand I was gruffly (older man) advised to take the trash outside. After ordering i went to the outhouse about 100 feet east of the store and it was worse than the old forest service pits. The apparent owners did not advise me of the inside restroom option. We are in our 70's and have been going to the Sierra's for more than 65 years. We have NEVER been treated like that in any other mountain resort and never been to a place that seems to care so little about providing some limited comfort to customers. ||||Based on other more positive reviews, it may be the owners treat long time customers better than first-timers. If so that says a lot about them.

The reviews say it all. VLR is probably not for everybody. It's for people who can handle high altitudes and who think a rustic cabin should be, well, RUSTIC and that glorious scenery at nearly 10,000 feet earns an excellent rating all by itself. The owner and staff could not have been more accommodating during our 3 night stay. The little cafe serves an excellent breakfast and a tasty burger and sandwich menu from 11 to 5. We cooked some meals in the cabin's tiny kitchen equipped with a propane stove and full size frig. The queen bed and extra twins in the living room were comfortable. Due to Covid, guests are asked to provide pillows and blankets. Hiking trails rise steeply from a nearby trailhead to a series of alpine lakes and spectacular views. Bring your fishing gear, a good book and a positive attitude.
