Tracy Q.
I had a horrible experience here. I was given a three day medical respite voucher for this motel after being discharged from a local hospital. Upon checking in, I was informed that there was a twenty dollar key deposit required if I wanted a key to the room. So, if I was to leave the premises I was to ring the office doorbell and then I'd be allowed access to my room by management. I use a walker and had difficulty with getting up the stairs leading to the office initially, and since I had been freshly discharged from the hospital, had no cash on me so I found that discouraging, that I would have to repeat the difficulty getting into the office area should I need to leave for any reason. I was assigned a room on the bottom floor, but all the rooms on the bottom floor have two very narrow steps leading to the doorways of the rooms that have no railings to grab on to. For myself, being mobility challenged- to me, this was sketchy and a fall risk. I was informed by the manager that starting at 9am they clean the room daily, no matter if you wanted / needed it or not, and that I was to "be quiet". This also didn't set well with me, as I was alone, with only a backpack and coming directly from a hospital stay, so to be told that I would be disturbed early the next morning with no choice in the matter and then aggressively ordered to " be quiet" when it was only myself there , I found this inhospitable and downright rude. It was very hot that day and so when I entered the room , as most motel rooms can be , it was stuffy and hot inside. The room was musty smelling and shabby, and not updated in the least bit. I immediately went to the AC unit to switch it on and there was no power to the AC unit. The windows also did not open as far as I could tell, and this upset me. After the initial weirdness of the check in, and such, I started to cry, not feeling well to begin with but also wondering what kind of place had the hospital staff sent me to, as I was far enough away from my home already. The manager immediately was at my door, yelling at me for being upset and not " being quiet" as I was ordered to do and that all I had to do was ask him to turn the power on for the AC unit, and that wasn't a big deal. Um, ok. So, he leaves and the AC comes on . Ok, great. I then went towards the television to turn it on, and saw that it wasn't hooked up to any antenna or cable connector, a bunch of coax cable runs were around the tv but not leading to any box , there was a dish TV remote but it didn't turn on the TV at all. The door to my room was still slightly ajar and the manager was still outside, so I asked him about the tv. He said that he was waiting for "the guy to come with the box", which I thought meant soon or that evening, but there wasn't any further action regarding that issue. The floors under the threadbare carpeting were unstable and uneven , like there were exposed pipes or 4x8 pieces of wood nailed to the existing floorboards and then one layer of the threadbare carpet laid over that, with no pad underneath. Again, another fall risk for me, or anyone really. I plugged in my almost dead cell phone to a wall outlet and for lack of anything better went to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night to the AC being off ( I had left it on low ) and the room back to stuffy and hot.I went to turn it on and it again did not turn on because of no power. I can only assume that management decided to cut the power to it to conserve energy costs? This was really outrageous to me, especially when in the morning I went to turn on my cell phone and found that it hadn't charged at all. I went into the bathroom to plug it into another outlet but that outlet did not work either. Then, as I was told, management was at my door right at 9 am to roust me and make me get up and leave the room for it's mandatory cleaning. I tried to discourage this citing that it was only me and 1 backpack in the room and it wasn't close to being messy in any way since I had been mostly asleep during the 9 hours I had occupied the room thus far , but he demanded I vacate despite my asking to not have to do this. This was again, a hassle for me because of the steps with no rails and navigating exit down them with a walker was challenging and again a scary fall risk situation. I was having to take my time attempting to put my shoes and socks on, which is difficult for me without assistance and they weren't of the slip on and off type and I apparently wasn't hurrying up fast enough for the manager so I was reprimanded for that. I tried to explain my situation with the shoes and that I was in pain which was leading me to not hurry but he wasn't having it. Yes, to the point that he informed me that I was going back to the hospital, and had called an ambulance to return me there because I was in " too much pain", and needed to go back. The next thing I know the EMTs are there already and putting me onto a gurney and that was all she wrote. I was taken back to the ER, that I had been discharged from the previous day- for absolutely no reason except for that manager felt that my situation was inconvieniencing his running of the business, which was untrue. I was discharged from the ER within 2 hours of being brought back, because there wasn't any reason to keep me there to begin with. My only consolation to this ridiculousness was that I was closer to my home and able to get a hold of somebody to pick me up from there and take me back to my home city, which is closer to the hospital than where the motel was. Although I had two days remaining on my voucher , and could have returned to the motel, I decided to pass on that , and I believe rightfully so. I certainly hope that anyone paying 100 bucks plus a night for accommodation there hasn't had the strange and unpleasant experiences that I had to endure being a " guest" there. Obviously the property management profiles the voucher recipients( that they have a signed a contract with the county guaranteing three days of rack rate payment for) and offers not the same accommodation to these people versus " regular" guests, which using third party booking sites, actually pay less per night than the county pays them for a three day stay for their citizens who need it. So my advice is, don't stay there even and especially if it's free. Huh?
