If you want to stay in complete isolation this is a great place. Location is good and you are minutes away from Bear Valley and Alpine lake...there is nothing around so take everything you need. The host was nice and friendly...the lodge was completely empty...rooms could be better, the house can be cleaner...the only complain I have is the extra charge for sheets and towels. I have never stayed at air bnb where there are extra charges for sheets and towels. Overall we had fun at the place.

Our family stayed here with two other families, all with teenagers. We had one of the “barn” suites, which are large and dog-friendly. These have a bedroom, living room, kitchenette and full bath that I think would accommodate six comfortably in beds. ||The lodge has a large kitchen with full breakfast options including eggs to cook (eggs cost just a bit extra), cereal, fruit, yogurt, and more. We brought in food to make dinner and used the kitchen as well as the outdoor grills, and ate that on the lovely deck outside. There is also a rec room with a ping pong table and board games that kept our teenagers happy for hours. ||It’s near several beautiful hikes and Lake Alpine, which offers swimming and kayaking. We did all that too and I highly recommend it - fun and gorgeous. I understand it’s also near skiing but we were there in summer, so I can’t comment. Also not too far is Arnold (great restaurants) and Big Trees.

Came here mid-week for 2 nights to get a place near the cross-country center, and the price was right (booked directly on their website). Kids enjoyed use of sledding stuff, room was plenty warm, and lodge had familiar & rustic feel to it. The owners dined in the common kitchen alongside us, friendly and down to earth. My only complaint was that our chalet room was small, but this was advertised accurately, and next time I'll get a slightly larger room.||||If you cross-country ski, it can be ski in/out, assuming there is enough snow for the trail that runs adjacent. NO ski in/out for downhill, but mountain is nearby.

We loved our stay, and the location is perfect! Great trails close by, very comfy and perfect for a getaway at the woods! The hosts are very welcoming (Tim and Vicky) and rocked! Great restaurants in the area, and we were able to hit some cool hiking and Jeep trails! Thank you!

Tamarack Lodge is in a great location and has very hard working innkeepers. The Chalet is less than appealing though! The rooms are cramped and crowded. The beds were lumpy and the sheets were overused. Dishes needed to be sterilized before using, Bathroom shower had pink mold and floors were dirty upon arrival. Overall decor is early “garage sale” and nothing matches. Bags of garbage sat outside the Chalet for the two days we were there. The next door room had the refrigerator and microwave in the hall instead of inside the room. Prices were expensive and there was very little value here. Would not recommend! Stay at the Village of Bear Valley instead.

Great place to stay if you’re in Bear Valley. We’d booked a rent a tent through hipcamp, but we called, they said they haven’t set the tents up as there’s still snow on the ground. They offered one of the rooms for the same price; which was cool. Didn’t realize the bathrooms are shared, but they are very clean. The innkeepers are very hard working and go out of their way to help you out. Highly recommended.

We found the lodge to be quite expensive ($200) for what we got. We had Chalet 11 which featured a kitchenette with a faded sofa and a bedroom with a queen and a bunk with a full and a twin. The bathroom was like my first apartment's bathroom from college. ||||The bed was very very soft, which I found uncomfortable. The pillows were okay but for the price, could have been down.||||The linens and towels were clean. The towels were sort of dingy. The carpet had paint spots. Other than that, the place was clean. There were a couple of large ants in the sink, but luckily, that doesn't bother me too much. ||||The entry into the three-unit chalet was not very charming - lots of cleaning supplies and such - so the entry was not very welcoming. It would have been nice to have instructions for the heater or a more intuitive thermostat.||||This spot would be nice if you were headed to Bear Valley for a few days, I suppose. Perhaps we caught it off-season. It was a bit messy. Perhaps all the debris in the parking area would have been covered by the snow. I think had the room been less expensive, this would have been a four star review with the above caveats. I'd like to give it four stars because it must be hard to run a mountain lodge. Maybe I'll upgrade it later.

The Lodge is an ideal place to stay for winter sports, close to both downhill and cross-country skiing at nearby Bear Valley. (Also great for summer stays). Very friendly and knowledgeable owners who can help out with suggestions for what to do and where to go. The Lodge is comfortable, informal and great value for money. Good for families, couples, groups of friends and solo travelers alike. Highly recommended.
