Can't say enough about our stay with Steele and Spirit of Alaska. To be the only guests at the lodge, a former cannery, made us feel like VIPs staying at an exclusive, unique property. My dream was to see bears in the wild from sea kayaks, since I am a wheelchair user, and with Steele expertly guiding us we saw many, includng several up close--along with the teeming, spawning salmon the bears were looking for. Just a magical, unforgettable experience. Nothing else we experienced on our bear viewing-focused trip to AK came close. We'll be back!

We traveled to Kodiak the first week of August 2021. Spirit of Alaska was an adventure of a lifetime. Steele and Shelbee allowed us to experience the beauty and history of Kodiak. The adventure starts with a floatplane ride over the beautiful island. You stay at a cannery filled with history and they will gladly give you a tour. The cabin you get to stay in is very nice. Steele and Shelbee work very hard to give you a personalized trip with exactly what you want to do. In our case the goal was to see as much wildlife as possible. Every day you can go out on the boat, kayak, and hike. There is a chance you can see fox, deer, and river otters without even leaving the cabin. Kayaking allowed us to get close to seals, sea otters, and puffins. On the boat we followed a pod of orcas and even saw a fin whale. We also went looking for Kodiak brown bears and saw several. The tides were not always working in our favor to get to the best spots for bears, so hopefully I can come back and plan accordingly. The bears are not used to people like in the national parks so it is hard to get close, but Steele worked every day to make sure I saw them. Kodiak has to be one of the hidden gems of the world. I can't imagine too many places are more beautiful and I don't think you can beat having a personalized trip with Steele. We are very grateful to Steele and Shelbee for this fun experience and to Vicki for helping us plan.

We were unsure whether we should travel, given the pandemic. But we figured retreating to the wilderness was probably the safest we could be! We are so glad we were able to keep our vacation with Spirit of Alaska! The lodge is set right on the water and the views from our windows were amazing. We loved watching the foxes, otters and fish jumping right from the couch. Steele helped us plan our daily activities suited to our wants and needs. As novice fishermen, he was patient and taught us some tips and tricks to score some salmon, cod and halibut. We were also able to kayak among otters, seals, sea lions and puffins. A highlight was kayaking down a stream as the tides came in and seeing bears looking for fish. Even though the salmon are coming in late and in low numbers this year, we still saw nine bears on that trip. Steele does a great job as a wilderness guide and the privacy of the lodge and ability to tailor the trip to your specific desires made for an unforgettable adventure. I would highly recommend this lodge for anyone seeking to enjoy a remote, beautiful experience in the wilderness.

I visited Spirit of Alaska this summer with my two kids who are 8 and 10. Immediately upon arriving, I realized we had hit traveler utopia. We were flown to the lodge but the kindest gentleman who took time to give us a tour of the island and history of the area. We landed outside of the lodge to be welcomed by Steele, the owner. Steele, unloaded our gear and showed us to the lodge. He gave us time to settle in and then we got to planning. There were many things we wanted to do and in the short time we were there Steele made sure we did it all. He took us kayaking with Kodiak bears where we were the only people. This is not a stand on the shore in a group while watching the bears experience. Instead imagine kayaking down a creek to see the bears, fishing, interacting and playing with their young. We took to the shore to fish salmon and then headed out to sea to catch halibut. Steele paid particular attention to the kids making sure they were safe, able to use the gear on their own and showing them an immense amount of respect. On our last time, I was keen to show the kids wild Orcas and Steele delivered. We drove out to sea and found around 20 some with babies. After that we were treated to a visit to Puffin rock and exploring Steele's favorite islands with seals, sea lions and more. You won't regret booking this trip. It truly is the experience of a lifetime.

We just got back from our fishing trip in Kodiak with Spirit of Alaska. It was such an amazing experience. We were there for 5 days and we could have stayed for 5 weeks. There is so much to do and it is so incredibly beautiful. Steele and Shelbee are the ultimate guides and hosts. They are wonderful people who are so knowledgeable and hardworking, We couldn't have asked for more. I don't know how they do it all.||||The accommodations are rustic. You have everything you need and not a lot of unnecessary fluff. The views from the guest house are insane. I could have spent days just setting on the couch looking out the windows. But we didn't ....we were busy fishing, fishing, fishing, watching wales and finding bears. ||||We were a handful. We had 2 adults and 5 kids, a blended groups that isn't all together very often but with their boundless energy, Steele and Shelbee kept us all going. Everybody looks forward to visiting again. The kids had so much fun but also rolled up their sleeves when they were put to work. It was great. We hope to go back with and also without kids. ||||I don't often write reviews but I was super apprehensive about booking such a big trip without knowing someone who had done a trip with Spirit of Alaska in the past. The trip advisor reviews gave me the confidence to pull the trigger and I am so grateful we did. Happy to take the time to write this review as soon as we got back. Do it!! You won't regret it.

Accessed by float plane from Kodiak, included in your booking, Spirit of Alaska Wilderness Adventures provides a private and peaceful "off the grid" experience in the midst of Alaskan wilderness surrounded by amazing scenery and abundant wildlife. While you'll be unplugged from the outside world, your guide will have a satellite phone connection should an emergency occur. Upon arrival, Steele will get you settled into your accomodations and then the intinerary and pace is up to you. He's an amazing fishing guide and also offers kayaking, wildlife viewing, and lodging for hunters. While cooking is up to you (bring your own food) there is a fully equipped kitchen, including an espresso maker and outdoor gas grill. The most unique aspect of this location is the rich history of Parks Cannery. You'll be sleeping in the old dining hall, which has been converted into comfortable rooms with private baths and two spacious living rooms with large windows overlooking Uyak Bay. In your down time, take a walk through the historical buildings nearly perfectly preserved as they were when the cannery closed over 30 years ago. You'll see the old processing equipment, stocked shelves in the company store, and the still-intact work areas of administrative offices. Spirit of Alaska Wilderness Adventures offers a truly unique experience that's totally worth your investment in traveling to this remote and historic location.

When we first stepped off the plane we knew we were in good hands, Steele welcomed us and showed us round our lodge giving us time to settle in before we planned an exciting day ahead. It was clear he was very passionate about the wildlife and was also very knowledgeable about them as well as passionate about the natural world. The lodge is basic but comfortable and huge! You could do cartwheels in the lounge (and my sister did!). My mum was transfixed by the view from the lodge and kept saying it was vast and beautiful and making us all look at the otters and jumping fish. We started our first day with a boat trip in which Steele showed us all the islands with plenty of wild native Alaskan animals such as puffins, LOTS of sea otters, and seals. Everyone in my family fell in love with the sea otters - they were sooo cute! Steele respected each animal and we could see this while we took the trip as he never chased any of them and did give them space. Throughout the trip we had so many exciting experiences and Steele was very accommodating, letting us do all the activities we wanted as well as suggesting plenty of others. My sister, my dad and I all learnt to fish which was really fun as both my sister and I caught plenty of fish, including pink and red salmon, Irish lords and Dolly Vardons (?). Not only were we welcomed by Steele but we were also welcomed by the resident foxes - Hat and Rascal (we gave them one of the fishes we caught!). On our final day we saw a pod of orcas - that was definitely one of the best things. We also saw nesting bald eagles. Seals, sea lions and, amazingly, some mother bears with cubs just walking along the shoreline. They were both impressive and utterly gorgeous. Steele took us kayaking across the bay and into a river - we saw an eagle in flight chasing a duck which was incredible. The landscape was unspoilt, beautiful, huge and totally lacking in people but heaving with birds, animals and fishes. On the last day we picked up his daughter Shelbee, and Steele bought us all soft serve ice creams - definitely the best in Alaska. When we were on the boat both my sister and I had to wear life jackets, even though my mum is definitely the worst swimmer. All in all this was an incredible trip and was great because of Steele and his knowledge and kindness. Also on the final night Shelbee showed us all how to make s’mores which were delicious and helped round off an awesome trip. On the plane ride back we all agreed we didn’t want to leave!

We stayed here for 4 days in early August, 2019. Steele was a great guide, doing all we could ask for and more. He knew exactly where to find bears, and on the day we spent bear viewing, he took us on a bear trial through the riverbank weeds, and the bears were right where he said they would be. We saw tons of birds, and used his boat anytime we wanted to catch good light for photographs. There were two foxes who spent time near the lodge, a few times we could have touched them as they walked past us. The lodge wasn’t fancy, but we knew that going in. It had everything we could need, including no internet nor phone service for a few relaxing days off the grid. The view out the lodge window was a million-dollar view, and we enjoyed it each night as we ate dinner. Highly recommended, and we would love to return someday.
